Getting quality training is essential, and only medical assistant schools in Florida that are accredited and licensed should be considered. As a student, you will need to take a number of certification examinations in order to be licensed in Florida, and good programs will be aligned to get you adequately prepared.

In Florida, you can choose between a medical assisting certificate/diploma, an Associate’s and Bachelor’s degree. Typically a certificate program can be completed in under a year with many of them only lasting 6-10 months. During this type of medical assistant program, you will take basic courses in Medical Terminology, Anatomy, Pharmacology and Office Procedures. Upon completion, you should have the necessary skills to perform basic laboratory tasks including sterilizing medical tools and drawing blood. In addition, you will be expected to know basic administrative tasks such as assisting physicians and filling out medical billing and coding paperwork.

If your goal is to be more hands on in the medical field, we recommend you looking into AAS and BAS degree programs. These typically take between 2 and 4 years, respectively, to complete. Classes you should expect to take during both of these routes include Medical Office Procedures I and II, Medical Law and Ethics and Electrocardiography for Medical Assistants.

These advanced programs most often always require you also complete an externship in a medical setting to give you the hands on experience that you can’t gain in a classroom. Although all schools have different requirements, most will typically fall between 120-160 hours, but this is not always the case. This includes conducting hands on observations in areas such as laboratories, doctor’s offices and urgent care centers.

Medical assistant schools in Florida provide that opportunity, and the healthcare field is only one of a few growth areas of the state’s economy. After graduation, you can find employment in a number of areas, ranging from medical billing offices to doctor’s offices or testing laboratories. Become the medical assistant that provides a vital and supporting role for clinical professionals, and use your new skills that are in high demand.

Most Florida medical assistant schools will help you to prepare for direct patient contact as well as administrative tasks. Students will learn how to perform a range of duties that include taking a patient’s vital signs to validating their insurance information. And, because there are so many choices available, you can easily find the right program for your particular career interests. From Pensacola to Miami, medical assistant schools in Florida are expanding and now is your chance to find a rewarding career in the growing healthcare field.
