Georgia Medical Assistant Curriculum

In Georgia, medical assisting programs are offered at public and private universities, technical colleges and community colleges, so you are sure to find one that appeals most to you. Although certification is not required to work in Georgia, it is recommended though as it will lead to more opportunities for you to pursue.

Receiving your medical assisting diploma/certification from an accredited school will take typically 8 months to 1 year to complete. During your program, which on average is 60 credit hours, you should expect to take classes such as Medical Terminology for Allied Health Sciences, Medical Insurance Management and Pharmacology in the Medical Office. Most schools also require you complete an externship in a medical setting as part of your school credits. For example, Atlanta Tech requires that an externship consist of 270 unpaid hours. This will give you hands on training experience and best prepare you for work in the healthcare field.

Deciding to work towards receiving your Associate’s of Applied Science (AAS) degree in medical assisting will make you the most marketable to potential employers. Typically, these programs are 88-92 weeks long (roughly 2 years) and include more in-depth training into the healthcare industry. Classes you can expect to take include Pharmacology and Drug Administration, Pathophysiology, Medical Laboratory Procedures and Medical Insurance Applications.

After you have completed your certificate program or received your AAS, you will be qualified to sit for the American Association of Medical Assistants National Certification Exam, a professional certification. This will make you a registered and certified Medical Assistant.
