Medical Assisting Curriculum in New Jersey

In New Jersey, you have the option of completing a program that results in either a diploma/certificate or a degree, typically an Associate’s of Applied Science (AAS) in medical assisting. Because becoming a licensed medical assistant is not required in Kentucky, you do not have to complete either program. That being said, choosing to attend a medical assistant school will open up more employment opportunities for you to pursue.

Programs that result in you receiving your certificate can typically be completed in 9 months to 1 year. During your education, you will learn to perform both clinical and administrative tasks in a number of medical facilities. Classes you may expect to take as part of the curriculum include Administrative Medical Assistant Principles, Phlebotomy Theory and Lab, Pharmacology and Pathophysiology.

Completing an AAS program is a great option to consider for more advanced employment opportunities. These programs can be completed in 2 years if you take classes as a full-time student. While completing this curriculum, you may take classes including Dynamics of Healthcare in Society, Clinical and Medical Office Procedures I and II and typing and Medical Machine Transcription. These classes will help to prepare you for your required externship. During your externship, you will work under direct supervision from a licensed physician to gain hands on experience in the field. In New Jersey, this is required as part of your medical assisting curriculum, and will offer you the most real world training.

Once you have successfully finished your certificate program or AAS degree, you are then eligible to sit for the American Association of Medical Assistants National Certification Exam, to become a certified medical assistant (CMA).
